Behind The Lens

Location

The bird in flight was taken at the Adelaide Zoo in South Australia, Australia. The challenge was to find a location that did not interrupt the view of the others that came to see the show. Standing next to a large tree seemed like the best location.

Time

This was taken around noon. The bird shows at the Adelaide Zoo only occur two or three times a day. With the light, I thought mid-day might be the best.

Lighting

With natural light, I could have use filters. But if filters are used is it natural light. The shadows from the trees with the bright sun made it hard. It was decided to just set for the light and take rapid shots, hoping to capture one the highlighted the bird.

Equipment

Due to movement a hand held Canon 5D MkIII. 35-110 lens with a light hood to prevent sun glare.

Inspiration

So many photos are over worked in programs like photoshop they become photo art. I am inspired to take photos to capture "moments in time". Often these moments may never arise again, so capturing them can be inspirational.

Editing

Simple photoshop. Creating the background as black and white and highlighting the bird by keeping it in colour.

In my camera bag

Simply carry the Canon 5D Mk with 35-110mm lens and a lens cleaner. Sometimes I may carry a flash.

Feedback

Trial and error. With digital it allows for a lot of deletion but also increases the chance to capture that moment in time that will invoke memories in years to come.
