Location
I took this photo on a day trip to Death Valley in the fall of 2013. I was in the Mesquite Flat dunes before sunrise hoping for something spectacular that never really materialized, so I was walking around exploring when I found these tracks.Time
It was just after dawn and the light was still coming in at a low angle.Lighting
I used only the natural light, getting down on my belly for this shot to try to emphasize the ripple in the sand.Equipment
This was shot on my Nikon D3200 with a Sigma 18-250mm lens I use primarily when traveling.Inspiration
This shot was the result of changing gears when things weren't going my way with what I'd originally intended. I set out looking for an epic panoramic photo of the dunes at sunrise. When that didn't happen, I went into hunting mode, looking for interesting lines in the dunes, shadows, patterns, etc.Editing
I post-processed this shot in Photoshop, mostly adjusting curves to add some contrast and vibrance to give the sand a little more color and interest. In my camera bag
I always carry my D3200 and Sigma 18-250mm lens, but in addition I also carry a set of macro tubes, a Nikkor 35mm prime, an IR remote, extra batteries, filters, a speedlite, extra memory cards, a flashlight and bug spray.Feedback
For me, this shot wasn't really planned, but if you're setting out for something similar, you have to put yourself in a position for success. Go somewhere amazing, and get there before anyone else. To make it out to these dunes before sunrise, I left my Vegas hotel at 4am. Open your eyes and be receptive to what the day gives you - it may not be what you thought you wanted, but it may be exactly what you need.
