Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my NEW back yard! So I was pretty excited to photograph in the beautiful leaves! I'm a self taught photographer, but I got my first camera when I was 8. I put the camera down for a long time until my kids were born. What mom isn't a photographer???

Time

It was pretty chilly and cloudy this day, but I was feeling pretty creative and needed to photograph SOMETHING! It was around 4:30 in the evening and it was pretty breezy, but the sun kept peaking through the clouds and I just knew I needed to play in some leaves.

Lighting

It wasn't a bright sunny fall evening, it was overcast with bursts of sunlight. Which was nice on the trees in the background.,

Equipment

I used a Canon Rebel XT and a 50mm 1.8 lens and a Neewer speed flash.

Inspiration

My inspiration was a family photo we had taken 3 years earlier. It was fall, the leaves were the backdrop, and I paid big bucks for that photo. I just know one day I can consistently take great (or better) photos than what I bought. Fall is a pretty popular option for family photos and what better way to practice than with my own family.

Editing

I only have access to Lightroom 5, and I took this picture before I learned I should be shooting in RAW format. I sharpened the photo and boosted the colors and contrast a bit

In my camera bag

I am very thrifty, being a stay at home mom of 2, a new home, and the beginnings of a mini farm, so I have an older Canon, the kit lenses that I rarely use, a 50 mm , speed flash, I just bought a 4 in 1 reflector, and I now have a Brass Petzval lens, and the basic tripod.

Feedback

My suggestion to photographing children, let them play. Get candid photos and the occasional pose, then they won't be so bored with photos.
