Behind The Lens

Location

I took this image on an overgrown lot. There was a abandoned house near by, but the tall grass makes it looks like they were in the middle of a meadow or field. It was in the autumn and those warm tones lend the image a very different feel than if the background was all green.

Time

I took the picture around mid afternoon. The sun was still really strong but I positioned them with the sun at their backs so that they wouldn't have harsh shadows on their faces.

Lighting

The strong back lighting provided by the sun is part of what gives this photo its' special mood. The figures and the grass being lit up from behind gives it an idyllic atmosphere.

Equipment

I took this handheld using a Canon Rebel Xsi with a Canon 135mm 2.0 wide open. No lighting was used.

Inspiration

I planned this session to showcase a mother-daughter relationship theme. The models are actually an aunt and her niece. I dressed them in the light colored clothing. For this shot I told them to kiss and this is the resulting image.

Editing

In post-processing the image, I focused on lighting up all of the darker areas in the background so as to put the focus on the figures.

In my camera bag

I shoot mainly with a Canon 6D and my go to lens is the 135mm. I also have a Sigma 50mm 1.4 and a wide angle lens. I use off camera flash quite a bit and like magmod modifiers.

Feedback

The narrow plane of focus is key for this shot. It wouldn't have the same impact at all if every blade of grass was in focus. To get that narrow focus, try using a longer focal length and a wider aperture. Another thing that I think makes the image work is the crop. They are cut off at the bottom and they aren't perfectly centered, but it totally works in that negative space around the figures frames them and doesn't let your attention wander.
