Behind The Lens

Location

I photographed one of the musicians during a rehearsal of the award-winning Bluecoats Drum & Bugle Corps out from Canton, OH. This trumpet player is also a gymnast and this jump was part of the choreography in their program at the time.

Time

This was taken midday.

Lighting

This was a bright day although I don't think it was particularly sunny so contrast was minimal.

Equipment

Nikon D700 with a Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 VR lens. No flash or other equipment.

Inspiration

I had observed this musician doing this jump several times during the rehearsal and wanted to try to catch him mid air.

Editing

Just colour correction and some minimal Lightroom adjustments for light and contrast.

In my camera bag

Nikon D700 (now a Nikon D750, Nikon D780), a Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 VR, Sigma 24-70mm f2.8, Nikon Speedlight SB800, 2 wireless triggers, batteries for camera and flash, gray and white cards for white balance, high speed SD cards, reading glasses

Feedback

Because I had excellent lighting that day, using a high shutter speed wasn't a problem but that would be the priority for this type of shot. I also kept to a low f stop (f4.5) to blur the background a bit. Because the background was still quite busy and colourful, I decided to make the image black and white and paint the musician back in with colour to better highlight him. This technique can easily be learned through you tube videos.
