Behind The Lens

Location

I actually took this photograph on the water front in my home city of Mississauga in Canada. It was about 1 degree Celsius (about 34 degrees F) but colder because of a brisk wind. But we wanted the beauty of natural light.

Time

This shot was taken midday.

Lighting

This was natural light. Using an open sky in shade.

Equipment

This was shot on my Nikon D750 with a 70-200mm f2.8 VR lens. No flash.

Inspiration

I was asked by a friend if I could do a photo shoot for his daughter Kendra who is in the theatre program at Sheridan College in Oakville. I asked him why since Sheridan offers one of the top photography programs in the country. There should be tons of student photographers looking for a gig. He said they always bailed and could not keep a commitment. So he needed a pro like me who could do the job. It would be for his daughter's makeup test so we would shoot her and her friend on whom she had done the makeup. I got lucky, these two ladies were used to being in front of a camera and they seemed like experts at posing. They took care of the look, I took care of the angles and the technical stuff. It was easy. It turns out Kendra got the highest marks in her class.

Editing

Yes, minor colour correcting and retouching. Kendra's hat was covered in dog hair and lint so I had to fix that.

In my camera bag

Nikon D750, Nikon D7100, Nikon 70-200mm f2.8, Nikon 17-35mm f2.8, Sigma 24-70mm f2.8, Nikon SB800 flash, 4-16 GB SD cards, 5 AA batteries, 3 camera batteries, gray card, ear plugs (concerts)

Feedback

Use spot meter if needed. Shoot in shade but look for a big open sky for best light. Focus on the eyes - always with portraits. Ask for a lot of different poses and expressions. Smiles aren't always the only look you should go for. Sometimes it's ok to shoot when the model isn't even ready because the movement or pose will be more natural. Keep an eye on your light source and how it looks on the model - always.
