Behind The Lens
Location
The photo was taken on the east side of Okinawa, Japan in the East China Sea. I am a self taught amateur photographer that loves the ethereal effects of black and white long exposures.Time
This particular day was a bright sunny afternoon. I usually don't shoot in the afternoons, however it had been awhile since I've been out shooting so I took advantage of the free moment. I decided to explore the east side of the island hoping that I could get more cloud coverage and an interesting subject to shoot.Lighting
Because of the nice sunny day, the sun provided perfect shadows and highlights to add depth and detail to the brick structure.Equipment
I shot this with a Nikon D800 mounted on a Three Legged Thing tripod, my lens of choice was my Zeiss 18mm f/3.5 Distagon T* ZF.2 with a Lee Filters Big Stopper and HiTech ProStop 3 giving 13 stops.Inspiration
I've been living on the island of Okinawa for 6 years and visited this locations multiple times in the last 3 years, each time resulted in to many people, not the right light, not enough clouds and not happy with the composition. Finally, the perfect day came! As I said before I usually don't shoot in the afternoons, however I took a chance. I've always been drawn to the long curved walkway leading to the fortress. I wanted to capture emptiness of it, but give life at the same time.Editing
Yes, I did post processing. With black and white you have the conversion process, everyone has their different workflow when it comes to this. For me I use SEP2 to convert to B/W and in PS CC I do a lot of dodging and burning, curves. But before this process begun I used the color sample and brush tool to give the effects of a vanishing horizon. In my camera bag
I'm fairly simple........my bag never changes. I carry my Nikon D800 with MB-D12 mounted. To compliment the D800 I have my Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8, which gives me the midrange that I need at times and Zeiss 18mm F/3.5 which gives that wide angle. I love shooting with the Zeiss, it's light and extremely sharp. I also carry 3 ND filters, Lee Filters "Big Stopper", HiTechs 3 and 6 stop. I can never leave home without my Hasselblad 503cx with color and b/w film.Feedback
I've learned with landscape/seascape long exposure photography knowing when the sun rises and sets is extremely important especially if your capturing soft colors. Other heard lessons learned are having a tide tracker and understanding exposure times with the different ND Filters. Lastly, overcast days produce great black whites.
