Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken in the Mediterranean sea on the coast of the beautiful Balearic island Menorca. It was just in front of a cave entrance.

Time

It was in the morning about 10:00h.

Lighting

It was a typical mixed light shot (natural light and strobe light). Strobe was in the M mode with 1/16 power.

Equipment

Nikon D300 with Sealux CD300 housing, Nikkor lens 10-24mm (16mm), Nikon strobe SB900 with Sealux housing.

Inspiration

A Slipper lobster lives normaly inside caves or cavern. My dive buddy an I just came out of a cave and we have seen the Slipper lobster passing on a sunny morning a sand aerea in front of us. It was a MUST to take this shot because it is very rar to find this type of lobster during a day dive out of cave. That's why we called him "The daywalker". ;)

Editing

I eliminated some backscatter because of too much reflections from the particles in the water. White balance and colour was improved.

In my camera bag

2x Nikon D300, Nikkor 10,5mm fisheye, Nikkor 60mm micro, Nikkor 10 - 24mm, 2x Subtronic strobe Pro 160, Nikon strobe SB-900, Inon strobe Z-240, Sync cable 5m,

Feedback

Never use too fast shutter speed underwater while shooting wide angle. Otherwise the powerful blue colour of the water getting too dark. Try to shoot in the deepest position to the ground and go so close as possible to the subject. That gives a better "WOW" effect.
