Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken in my home studio several years ago. I was just starting out in my pet photography, so it was very interesting and fun!

Time

Taken in the afternoon.

Lighting

I used a 5x7 Larson soft box with a Lumihawk 600 light camera left. Fill light camera right with an umbrella and a second Lumihawk 600

Equipment

Shot on Nikon D700, 24-120 lens on tripod

Inspiration

The client asked for portraits of her 2 Boston Terriers as she was a breeder and needed images. The final editing is what makes the image tell the story in my mind.

Editing

Lots of post processing done here. In order to give the image some impact, I added texture to the whole image and hid it on the dog. The texture gives the image a rustic feel, like it was taken in a dark basement, where secret meetings are held...There were some hot spots on the blanket in front, and that was fixed using cloning and burning in Photoshop. There was adjustments done with contrast and color to give it a warm, but mysterious feel.

In my camera bag

At that time it was my D700 Nikkor 24-120 f/4 lens.

Feedback

Watch for hotspots from lights, make sure you have another person to help with pets. I had a rubber chicken and the dog went mad over it...it was quite funny but it got his attention.
