This shot was taken from Hill Inlet on Whitsunday Island looking out over the bay towards Whitehaven beach, Queensland, Australia. What makes this shot special is I had sailed there on the Solway Lass which is a sailing ship built in 1905.Time
The time was about mid-day as the sun was high in the sky and very hot but the sea was quite cold and even with stinger suits I could stay in the water for only 10 mins before I starting to shiver.Lighting
Because the sand is silica base and very white I had to be careful not to over expose the shot and took a couple of pictures at differing settings, this one I liked the best out of the lot as the heat haze is apparent but the detail on the far shore can still be seen and the colour contrast is amazing.Equipment
I was using a Sony DSC-HX9V which is a small mirror-less camera but takes cracking shots and I need a compact lightweight camera as I was travelling by motorcycle so space was at a premium.Inspiration
The colours mainly, i'm not a fan of black & white pictures but in their own context they are quite good, then the view who wouldn't want a view like this hanging on their wall or through a window of a house. WOW!Editing
No processing whatsoever with this shot, I try to do as much with the camera as I can then as little as possible on the computer, but this shot i'm happy with just as it is as it captures everything that was happening at the time I took it and processing would take away the little details that make this picture for me.In my camera bag
I'm normally loaded down with a Canon 6D, lenses, flash, spare batteries, tripod, GpPro, contour+, cleaning gear etc, etc, but not having all that equipment and going back to basic one camera was quite liberating as I did not have to worry about hauling all that weight and setting everything up, just find a spot for my camera to sit, adjust the settings and take the picture. Get used to your equipment, once you know what to adjustments you need for a particular shot your half way there, then you need to get out there and practice and somewhere along the way it will become automatic.
