Behind The Lens

Location

This photo of the Glasgow observation tower was taken on the banks of the River Clyde at the Science Park in Glasgow.

Time

It was a sunny day across Glasgow on the 28th of July, the day after my birthday, 2014. The Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games were in full swing, and I had a few days off my day job. It was one of the rare occasions that the tower was working and was open to the public. I took this shot at 12:55 pm on a beautiful cloudless day.

Lighting

All natural light. It was a very sunny day so I had a shutter speed of 1/1000 sec and an ISO of 100.

Equipment

When it comes to equipment photography can be an expensive hobby; more expensive than I can afford. I used an Olympus E-510, which I had bought second hand from a friend of my parents. I used a standard Olympus Zuiko Digital 14-42mm wide angle kit lens which came with the camera, and a steady hand.

Inspiration

There are many photographs of the Glasgow tower, just as there are many photographs of other landmarks around the world. I wanted to try and get a different perspective. So, lying on my back, and pointing my camera directly up the shaft I found that different perspective. It turned out to be one of the best photographs I took that day.

Editing

I have been teaching myself Photoshop for about a year and a half and I am still learning the post processing techniques. For this photo it was general processing, some contrast adjustment and some levels adjustment.

In my camera bag

Usually I have my Olympus E-510 with a wide angle lens along with an Olympus Zuiko Digital 40-150mm zoom lens. Along with my camera and lenses I will have my tripod and a remote shutter release. Often I will also take my Fujifilm Finepix S3300 bridge camera, which is what I learned the basics on, just in case I need a spare camera.

Feedback

If someone is looking to get a different perspective or unusual angle on something, don't be afraid to look silly. If you need to lie on your back to get the angle then that's what you do. People around you might stare at you, but you will never see them again, and you just might go home with a great photo.
