Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo from the edge of a small pond just outside Grand Rapids, Michigan. It's a relatively shallow pond that is the home to swans, ducks, muskrats and at times wading birds such as egrets and herons.

Time

It was mid-afternoon, and the newly hatched cygnets were being escorted by mom and dad on a tour of their home. A very light breeze caressed the water's surface to provide some shadows and depth to the shot.

Lighting

The day was quite bright. So I used a polarizer to bring out the blue of the water and help brighten the adult bird's colors.

Equipment

This hand held picture was taken in aperture mode with a Sony A350 using a Tamron 28-300 lens.

Inspiration

Because I enjoy the challenge of trying to capture images of birds in their natural environment, this image not only did that but also seemed to bring out the idea of family and the effort these adult geese would have to go through to protect and guide their little ones throughout the summer and early fall.

Editing

Post processing amounted to no more than using an unsharp mask filter in Photoshop.

In my camera bag

In addition to the Tamron lens used in this shot, I also have a Sigma 50-500 available for longer shots. A Monfrotto tripod comes along sometimes if landscapes are the object for the day. If I have left the tripod and home and need some stability, I use whatever is available such as a tree branch or fence post.

Feedback

I have found that once you have found a promising site, be prepared to return multiple times, from very early spring (even before the ice has completely melted) through the fall migration. The birds seem to get used to your being there, and they carry on their feeding, squabbling and family duties without regard to your presence.
