I took this photo in Manhattan Beach, CA. It was on the beach near the Manhattan Beach pier.Time
This is closer to sunset around 4p or 5p in the winter time. I was taking photos an hour before and decided to wait around just as the sun was setting to take sunset photos.Lighting
It was just about sunset so the lighting was just right. It was about to be dark but there was enough colors in the sky and ocean to create the perfect sunset shot. So there is darkness in the ocean and the sky but in the middle is the sun setting giving off its colors as it descents.Equipment
I used a Nikon D3000, the lens was a standard 18-55mm VR lens and my eyes honestly. You can have all the physical equipment but what you see is the best tool that you can as a photographer. The tools just fine tune what your eyes see.Inspiration
It was Christmas Day when I took this photo. It was unusually warm that day so I thought I would treat myself to a beach....so did everyone else. I thought to take my camera see what shots I can get because I really enjoy taking landscape photos of beaches. The Manhattan Beach Pier has a lot going visually so I wanted to take as much as I could. I did and it was pretty much about to be sunset and I thought "I need some sunset shots" I walked along the pier and the Strand and anything I thought that would make a good photograph, I took. This was shot was towards the end of shooting and snapped as soon as I noticed the gradients just made a spectacular shot.Editing
When I process my photos on Photoshop, I am trying to edit the photo to be as close to how I saw the shot with my own eyes. In this case, I fiddled with the levels, increased the contrast and saturated the photo for the colors to be more prominent. Thankfully given the time of day, I did not need to tweak these settings all that much, it was more fine tuning. In my camera bag
I go rather light, I'll carry my camera Nikon D3000 with the 18-55mm VR lens, the lens that came with the camera. If want to shoot things that very far, I'll bring my telephoto lens with me. I carry light because I rely on the light that is around me and I am not afraid to get as close as I can for my shot.Feedback
Have a lot of patience and enjoy the area that you are taking photos at. In my experience, the best pictures I found was that I would take one particular in different angles and perspectives. Yes, I am spending about 10-15 on one shot but I found in that time I can going to hit at least 2-3 great photos. You have to try as many different things as possible. If you just take one picture in a certain way, you lose on the possibility of what could have been. Finally, trust your eyes; train your eyes to see what is makes a good shot. The more you photograph, your eyes get better at this. A gateway question before you even start pointing your lens and releasing the shutter is this, "What do you want to see?" Take a shot and when you look at the photo ask if this what you wanted to see. When you can answer yes, you more likely have a great shot in front of you.
