Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken at the Bushbuck Ridge Game Farm, located in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. It was my first visit to that particular location and one I would definitely visit again.

Time

It was round about 6PM when i took this, honestly could not have asked for a better golden hour scene. Having said that, the light really changes very quickly during that time so timing was everything here.

Lighting

100% natural light, no flash. i prefer natural light as far as possible and seeing as it was a nice clear evening with only a few scattered clouds I decided to take the light that mother nature gave me.

Equipment

Nothing overly special, Nikon D5200 and a 18-55 kit lens, handheld shot. I have to admit, I wish I had a 50mm for this shot, or perhaps a 24-70, but I'm still saving up for those (trying to at least)

Inspiration

This was a 80% spur of the moment shot. When I saw the background scene and the angle of the sun i quickly told the couple to just relax on the grass, the rest came naturally, I waited a few seconds and then got the look I wanted from them. You don't always have to pose a couple to get a great shot, sometimes it just takes a little nudge and the rest falls in place.

Editing

Yes, I used Lightroom for post processing. As far as possible I try to get the exposure right on the camera, but in this instance I new some post work would be needed as I did not use a fill flash for the foreground. All I really did was bump up the shadows, clarity and vibrance a bit.

In my camera bag

At the moment I pretty much have a standard kit, as I mentioned before I'm saving up for two better lenses. What I have in my bag: Nikon D5200 Nikon 18-55mm Nikon 55-200mm Sigma 70-300mm 4 SD Cards 3 spare batteries Lenspen

Feedback

Keep your eyes open, pay attention to the whole scene and how the light changes, especially at sunset. When photographing a couple make sure they are relaxed and comfortable, keep it natural and real. Most importantly, it's never just a photograph, make sure you tell the story.
