Behind The Lens

Location

In a swimming pool near Bern, Switzerland

Time

The picture was taken at noon, but since it was an indoor shooting, the time does not really matter for the lighting.

Lighting

I used two Seacam underwater flashguns at about half the power.

Equipment

Canon EOS 5D Mark II, Canon EF 20mm, Seacam underwater housing and two Seacam underwater flashguns.

Inspiration

When doing underwater photography, I always try to play with the viewers' senses. I therefore went very close to the water surface and rotated the image.

Editing

I did some beauty retouching on the model like use the Gaussian Blur filter on her skin. Further, I rotated the image by 180 degree. But most of the effect comes from desaturating the colors by around 85%.

In my camera bag

Usually, I have a D-SLR, my Canon EF 16-35mm, 24-70mm and 50mm in my bag, and usually a tripod. U complete underwater photography equipment is not something you just carry around like that, though.

Feedback

I prefer doing underwater photography in warm waters. I usually spend hours in the pool. It's up to the photographer whether he wants to show solidarity with the model or not and wear swimming trunks or a wet suit. But the model for sure does not wear a wetsuit, and if she get's cold, the shooting is over. I therefore prefer really warm and cozy water, for the model's and the shootings sake.
