Behind The Lens

Location

Hello. This photo was taken at a Wildlife Refuge located in South New Jersey in the USA. Each time I visit this area there is an abundance of migratory birds to enhance my self-taught photography skills. Each time has always been a challenge and great learning experience for me.

Time

This photo is undoubtedly one of my most favorite shots of wildlife. This particular bird is known as a Snow Egret, also called a Great Egret. They forage for food in areas known as feeder streams. This bird was standing in one of these feeder streams as most of the time they do. About 9:30 am I always sneak up on this stream and low and behold one was there. The Egret was so still awaiting his mid morn snack, that I was able to capture this wonderful pose with about 30 plus shots in all. This shoot only lasted a few short minutes so I had to act very fast.

Lighting

The lighting in the background came from a remote mounted flash together with a wireless trigger mounted to my camera. Also on the flash was a homemade snoot directing the flash to the background. The lighting on the frontal portion was from the bright sunshine directly behind me of the mid-morning .

Equipment

My camera this day was a Canon 7d, with the canon 400ex flash, mounted on a Rocket Fish Carbon Fiber tripod, Sigma 150-500mm OS lens and a RFN-4 wireless trigger attached.

Inspiration

My inspiration came from the way the egret was so still. It gave me just enough time to set up my equipment and start shooting. The plan I had was just the challenge I needed to complete my shoot on this wonderful bird just waiting for me to come along. It was a great experience for me. I often think back to this and say what could I do to make it better. Lesson well learned.

Editing

Post-processing was very minimal on this shot. Very little sharpening and color rendering. The shot came out just fabulous with all the factors coming into play on this well lit subject.

In my camera bag

My equipment is always my Canon T1i,Canon 7d, Canon 400 ex flash with plenty of rechargeable batteries,Canon 50mm f/1.8 prime lens and of course my Sigma 150-500mm OS lens which is always attached to my 7d. Assorted filters which are by Hoya. They are the Super Multi Coated filters, and my sturdy carbon fiber tripod.

Feedback

I always do my best to read about lighting. This photo had great background light to afford me this great shot. Light changes about every 30 seconds to one minute. You must be patient and always ready to shoot.Reflective lighting is your best friend when it comes to shots like this. Keep as much light to your back at all times and you too will learn as I have. Practice with all styles of light to get that very much sought after shot of your life. Thank You to View Bug for allowing me to share my story behind this shot. Have a great day.
