This photo was taken in September 2014 on Alcatraz Island in the Bay of San Francisco USA.Time
It was at noon so the light was perfect for this autumn photo.Lighting
The lighting was natural with blue skies so I simply used the space to its advantage.Equipment
I only ever hold my simple camera in my hands and voila!Inspiration
I love the fact that after such a tragic history this island is now a national park - this photo shows how nature has reclaimed the space with her beauty. It is all about the journey of recovery and reframing grief into new life.Editing
My post-processing involved cropping the photo so that my image moved in closer to the subject I wished to share. I also sharpened the photo with my powerpoint program. I like adding a background to the photo slide that highlights an aspect of the image - in this case I thought purple was the colour for my photo as it empowered the fuchsias which are for me like ballet dancers! In my camera bag
Since my car accident five years ago, I have not been able to carry anything heavy so when I travel and take photos, I have only a basic canon camera with everything built in. I rely on the subject being interesting and being able to take a shot that works when I view them later on my computer. This is ideal for me and rarely lets me down. I once met an award winning photographer who published her work globally and her BEST photo was taken with an automatic camera - it was the SUBJECT that rewarded her. I took that to heart and so far, have not been disappointed. For people with disabilities like mine, SIMPLE is BEST.Feedback
Nature is such a beautiful subject especially when juxtaposed with the built environment - keep your eye peeled for spaces where colour captures your attention and it tells a positive story of renewal - that is the spirit of my photo and it is a universal story. A photographer needs to be in tune with their space so that they have the best chance of making the moment live on with their photography.
