Behind The Lens

Location

Mostar, Bosnia and Hercegovina

Time

About 8am after we'd all slept for maybe two hours.

Lighting

Natural lighting on an August morning. A fair amount of finessing in Photoshop.

Equipment

Strangely, this was a candid shot with my iPhone 4s. Straight shot, no HDR.

Inspiration

I was on tour through the Balkans with the band Kultur Shock. Mostar is an amazing little city that was very hard hit by the war in the 90s. It still hasn't quite recovered. Blown out buildings. Bullet and mortar holes everywhere, but the spirit and generosity of the people is awe inspiring. The band played an amazing show the night before and we were treated to a pretty spectacular after party. The life of a mid-level band on the road is not very glamorous. It's a lot of work and you spend most of your time just trying to grab sleep when you can; in the hotel, in the green room, in the van. This was while were were waiting for a car to pick us up to get us to our van to head to the next city, Zadar, Croatia. Everyone's exhaustion level was very apparent and it really kind of sums up touring life for a band.

Editing

I painted out a stray person and the license plate on the car. Other than that, it was minor retouching, and playing with the levels and curves to get the proper contrast and B&W look.

In my camera bag

Canon 7d: 18-55mm 28-135mm 100-300mm 3 GoPro Hero 3+ iPhone 6s Plus with a wide, fish eye, macro and telephoto lens kit. I have to travel very light, so I shoot only natural light and rely on my Photoshop skills to pick up any slack in the lighting.

Feedback

If you're shooting a band; whether on stage or off, it's best to be ready with a camera at any moment. If I had blinked or not had my iPhone with me, I'd have missed this very seminal moment. Even though I'm very close with all the members of the band, sometimes maintaining a little bit of detachment and a little literal distance serves you well to get moments as candid as this.
