SWIMMING EIDER AND MALARD DUCKS

behind the lens badge

I found 2 ducks side by side thoroughly enjoying their swim in a creek. Couldn't resist the opportunity for a photo.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was a delightful discovery at a small event site for weddings and parties. Behind the venue is a small pond with resident ducks. They strutted as if they were the owners of this charming location.

Time

I took this photo during the "Golden Hour", one hour before sunset. The lighting was perfect to show off the magnificent colors of the ducks.

Lighting

I take photos for the most part under natural light. Often, I use light from windows to highlight the subject. If I shoot outdoors, I prefer the wind to be still as possible so I can pay attention to the subject and not the movement of trees or flowers. The golden hour is ideal for this.

Equipment

I used my Sony A3000. It was an impromptu decision to stop and shoot, so all I had with me was my camera with no extended lens.

Inspiration

I love colors and search for dominant ones in my photos. The setting of the sun combined with the brilliant colors of the ducks made for a glorious photo.

Editing

I did some cropping to bring out the importance of the ducks presence. Also, added some hues to the water to dramatize the other colors of the photo. I also checked the detail level of grain. If not using it for effect, I try to eliminate as much as possible without losing the quality of the photo.

In my camera bag

I used to carry a large "back pack" style back, full of all types of goodies. Since I am older and arthritic now, I keep my accessories simple: a small camera bag with interchangeable lenses. Immediate range and extended range.

Feedback

Camera equipment, if not kept under control, can become "baggage". I am not a professional nature photographer. Always have your camera handy with lenses you are familiar with and are easily interchanged. If you are free to focus on the subject without dealing with a lot of equipment, movement that you need to make is so much easier than if you are carrying a "photography store" on you. As my health became more fragile, I found it freeing not to have to use a tripod or other larger pieces of equipment. Wearable camera stabilizers are great ideas, or holding your arms tight against the sides of your ribs can give most of the stabilization of a tripod.
