This was an impromptu photo shot of my niece with her child peeking through to see who was watching her. It was taken at an annual fall picnic at one of our Metro Parks, which has a child's water play area.Time
Early afternoon offered a great opportunity to capture this little girls innocence. It was a slightly cloudy day which was perfect for capturing all the elements of her purity, curiosity, and a slightly coy personality without being spoiled by unwanted sun flares.Lighting
Natural light is always a blessing. This was a great opportunity for this shot as it was not too bright and the little trickles of water reflected the light without overpowering the subject.Equipment
I used a SONY A3000 and hand held the camera. No flash was needed. I just decided to add a note to this question. I have seen many playful discussions of which of the two major brands is best. In my view the best camera to use is the one you are most comfortable with. To capture spontaneous shots such as this photo you need to be able to move quickly and spontaneously. I started with a Sony Nex3 because I had been ill and couldn't hold a heavier camera. I have seen gone up to a SONY3000 and couldn't be happier. The size of the camera fits my hands and the weight is perfect for me. I really don't believe one brand is superior to another just because of name. The best camera is what works for you.Inspiration
I love to capture that "once in a life time moment". I realized this was a rare opportunity so I grabbed it.Editing
My goal was to make this child's porcelain-like skin be the highlight of the photo. Very little post processing was needed other than cropping and adding a special effect of darkening the external areas. This worked wonderfully and the desired result happened. In my camera bag
I carry both short range and long range lenses. Since I take of lot of natural light photos, I always have a lens cleaner and appropriate cloth to ensure any unwanted filaments of nature are not part of the composition. I try to keep my equipment as simple as possible as I have found the more I choose to carry slows my reaction to spontaneous shots.Feedback
Always keep your mind and eyes open for the unexpected. I feel many photographers have a sense something special is about to happen. Take advantage of that instinct. Natural light and children in a park can lead to numerous opportunities for pleasant surprises with your photos.
