Behind The Lens

Location

Jökulsárlon, Iceland.

Time

Late Evening, almost midnight or 1am

Lighting

Light in Iceland during the summer is spectacular. THe sun never dips much below the horizon, so the sunsets and sunrises are intense, and can blend together for hours. THis was one of those nights where everything lined up beautifully and the light was exquisite, wind was minimal, and all the necessary elements lined up perfectly.

Equipment

Canon 7D, Canon 100-400L lens, Polarizer, Singh-Ray 3-stop soft graduated filter.

Inspiration

If you can't be inspired by giant chunks of ice floating around in a lagoon, then you're dead inside. I've been to this lagoon now over 40 times, and each time it's amazing…and I never run out of ideas or excitement to see it. Every day is different, ice shifts, sinks, and changes…lighting is always different. Some days its subtle, some days it's intense, other days it's almost non-existent. Every day is different and the shots from one day will not be possible the next so each day yields original images unique to those circumstances.

Editing

Color adjustments, some slight colors shifts, sharpening, and that's it.

In my camera bag

2 camera bodies, 3-4 lenses, filters, cable releases, some random clothing items like spare gloves, and probably a granola bar or candy bar.

Feedback

I would tell people to go out. Put yourself in the most interesting locations you can at the times of day that will yield the best light. If you take a tour bus here in the middle of the afternoon, you'll be impressed, but you'll be swarmed with the crowds, and the light will not look like this. I'm not trying to sound arrogant but most people won't leave a paved road very far, stay up past 9 at night, or get up earlier than 6 or 7 in the morning. Now this shot isn't very far off the road…at all…but we were up at midnight, and there were maybe 10 other photographers in the entire area. During the day there is probably 200-300 people or more here at any given time. Getting nice images always requires a little extra effort. That's one thing I've noticed….and often that effort isn't always fun.
