Behind The Lens

Location

The photo ,along with many others, was taken in Toronto at The Rockpile Nightclub February 1, 2013.

Time

Shot around midnight on the first of February.Although it was a damn cold night outside, the club was packed, most people covered in perspiration and having a fine time

Lighting

The lighting in The Rockpile for this show was, by far, the worst lighting conditions imaginable. As tiny aas the stage is , it is ail backlit using older fresnel lights and a few Par Cans. They've since upgraded their lighting to front scanners and moving LeD's

Equipment

In 2013 I wwas using a Canon 50D and a 1D MKIIn. I belive this was shot with the 1D MkIIn.

Inspiration

There was no thinking when I took this.Johnny Dee had positioned himself in such a way that he was perfectly silhoutted against the Par Light. It was, simply put, "The right moment".

Editing

Just a simple black and white conversion, nothing more.

In my camera bag

Today? a Canon 6D and I still keep the 50D as a backup. As for glass.. The Nifty 50 a 24-70 F 2.8, a 70-200 F4 USM.a Rokinon 8mm Fish/superwide manual lens. (I really like the Rokinon,it's one of the first ones they released. Crappy coating and not very sharp but its a fun lens in some situations.

Feedback

Concert shooting, for me is understanding the band you're shooting. If I havent attended one of their shows I will be on youtube for hours studying their setlists and the stage settings, props and choreography.Once I have a good idea of their setlist and if theres anything to watch for I will take a few notes and study them again prior to their set. In most cases you have 2,3 songs to get "The Shot", so you better be prepared.
