Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo during a black and white portrait/nude work shop with Greg Gorman. It was my first time working with models and nudes and I learned so much from my time with Greg. He was not only informative, but was patient and great with letting you find your own pace.

Time

It was in a studio in mid-afternoon.

Lighting

The lighting was studio lighting that was provided for us for the workshop. On this set, we had a black backdrop and very minimal and bright white lights.

Equipment

I was shooting with a Nikon D600 with the 85mm 1.8 and used a soft flash.

Inspiration

The model was very pretty in an unusual way. Her features were almost elf-like but I loved how sultry she was with her poses. She had the Marilyn Monroe blonde hair and I loved her ease in front of the camera. During a break in shooting, I was instantly struck by the idea of doing her profile - but having her show some attitude at the same time.

Editing

I work in Lightroom only, so this was processed in Lightroom.

In my camera bag

I shot Nikon for a long time (and still have a D750) but have recently switched over the Sony a7ii. I always carry a wide angle with me, as well as a prime - either the 55mm or the 35mm. As I am normally an architecutral and street shooter, I don't carry or use a flash. I always have extra batteries and SD cards with me, as well as a cleaning kit for the lenses and camera.

Feedback

I find working with models to be difficult, as directing people is not something that comes naturally to me. If you are going to go that way, make sure you connect with the person - this model was a single Mom like myself, so we had had a discussion about our kids earlier, and that helped me to see her in a different way. Really watch the person and how they move - try to capture who they are, as opposed to who you think they should be. And try to do as little post as possible. Many people feel that they need to photoshop out the blemishes, wrinkles and re-contour faces, etc., but when I do portraits or boudoir, I won't do that.
