The idea of pilgrimage has always held a fascination for me. Historically, pilgrimages were frequently undertaken as a way of doing penance for former misdeeds and the desire for atonement. Today it has become more of a way of seeking spiritual insight. Probably one of the most well-known pilgrimage routes for Christians is the El Camino with literally thousands doing this 800 hundred-mile journey annually. This painting seeks to capture a rural section of a pilgrim’s route. I’ve rendered the pilgrim in a sketchy way, perhaps a little ethereal, as a way of underscoring the very long history of this spiritual endeavour shared by so many past and present.
