I was trekking in Norther Thailand with a charity who supported villagers affected by human trafficking. We stayed with and met many of the hill tribes people and images from my photo project were used by the charity on their website. This boy was one of many children vulnerable to be sold to work in the fields or factories and was unlikely to ever attend school.

Behind The Lens

Location

The hillside village of Huay Junn Si, Northern Thailand

Time

In the morning.

Lighting

Natural light.

Equipment

Canon 5D Mk II hand held, 24-105 IS USM lens at f/5.6, 105mm, ISO 200

Inspiration

I was trekking to the hillside tribes of Nothern Thailand with a charity that challenges human trafficking by engaging with the Village Heads and using a process of re-education about alternatives for the children of these very poor villages.

Editing

Cross-processed in Lightroom. Don't have the detailed steps.

In my camera bag

Nowadays, Canon 5D MK III, 24-70 F2.8 L IS USM, 70-200 F/4 L IS USM and sometimes 50mm f/1.4, 85mm f/2.8 and 24mm f/2.8 (all canon lenses)

Feedback

Engage honestly with the subjects (and their parents if youngsters). Become part of their environment if time permits. Gain trust before you 'whip out the camera'. Ask permission, tacit or otherwise. Get down on the ground with children, play and joke with them. Share the images afterwards, even let them try the camera (while you hold the strap in case it falls!)Be respectful. Laugh and smile a lot!
