This Gumprecht's green pitviper (Trimeresurus gumprechti) was found at around 1am in a never-before-surveyed area of Pu Mat National Park, Vietnam. Using a snoot-like diffuser, I was able to direct my flash to accentuate this snake's features.

Location
This viper was and photographed found deep in Pu Mat National Park, Vietnam on an expedition lead by the Biodiversity Group.Time
Towards the end of one of our nightly transects searching for over-looked biodiversity, this viper was found perched near a stream. Snakes are active long into the night, and this find at 12am was not particularly late!Lighting
I took my remote flash and placed it underneath the head of the snake to gain the moody effectEquipment
This was taken handheld with a Nikon D800E body, Nikkor 105mm f/2.8 VR lens, a SB900 speedlight on the hotshoe, and 2 handheld R200 remote flashes.Inspiration
When time permits I always try to take something out of the ordinary. Too often I am forced due to time constraints to only get typical "field guide" type photos. As this was the end of the transect, I seized the opportunity to get creative and emphasize the red eyes and fierce looking appearance of this Gumprecht's Green Pitviper.Editing
I applied my usual preset of minimal shadows and highlight reduction and minor color correction in LightroomIn my camera bag
Carried equipment always depends on intended targets. For the smaller fauna that I tend to focus on I currently carry 2 D810s, 105mm f/2.8VR, SB900, 2 SB700, Nikkor 16mm Fisheye, and a Venus Optics Laowa 15mm wide angle-macro.Feedback
Always try and move around and don't give up easily. Persistence pays off! The idea may not come immediately but when reviewing pictures taken at different angles, something may come to mind!
