Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at Parc Omega Montebello, Quebec Canada

Time

This photo was taken at 4:10 pm in the afternoon, September 2013.

Lighting

All the Arctic wolves were white so I had to make sure to get the details in their fur. Check you histogram to make sure you don't blow out the highlights.

Equipment

I used my Nikon D600 with my AF-S Nikkor 70-300mm lens, hand held.

Inspiration

As I was shooting the Arctic wolves at the park, a car passed by and they all took off together. As I was shooting, just for a split second, I notice that they were all looking in the same direction and I took this shot. I knew as I pressed the button that this one was going to be a keeper. Seconds later they all went back about their business. Ever since I heard them howling far off in a distance and gradually getting closer until all the wolves started howling together, I was forever taken by their beauty and sorrowful cries.

Editing

A bit of sharpening and curves in photoshop. Photo was also cropped for a tighter shot.

In my camera bag

I have a Nikon D600 Full Frame Camera that I carry everywhere. The lenses that I normally have in my backpack are the AF-S Nikkor 70-300mm 1:4.5-5.6 G, AF-S Nikkor 16-35mm N 1: 4G, and Micro Nikkor 40mm DX 1:2.8 G. I also carry a Tiffen Circular Polarizer, Tiffen Variable ND filter, 2 fully charged batteries, four 16 GB SD cards and a hahnel Giga T Pro 11 Wireless Timer.

Feedback

The photo was taken at F4.5, 1/600 sec. and an ISO of 250. My white balance is normally set to cloudy when I'm outside as I like the light temperature this gives me. Go to a nearby park that lets animals run free except for some well placed fences. There are so many amazing animals there and it makes you feel very connected to nature. This park was about 2 hours driving time from my house and it was well worth the drive. I like using my 70-300 lens because it allows me to get closer to them and still be able to hand hold my camera and pan if I have to. Don't forget to try all the different seasons, there is something new every time. Happy Shooting!
