Behind The Lens

Location

This picture is a part of my photo series titled Abstract Body Portraits. The photo was taken in a photo studio at The University of Bolton. I was a student there.

Time

In a afternoon. I was only able to get my fiance in a studio for 30mins. He hates his photograph taken. I guess because I didn't have that much time in a studio I couldn't over think the images. Sometimes this is a good thing.

Lighting

I used soft/low lighting because I wanted to get more shadows and definition in the body.

Equipment

This image was taken with a Pentax K-r camera and a DAL 18-55mm lens. I only used one main light with a large soft box.

Inspiration

I was bored of taking photographs of faces and also I was inspired by the work of Robert Mapplethorpe, Henry Callahan and Tono Stano. I think the body can be just as if not even more interesting than a face.

Editing

I only retouched some spots on the body by using Photoshop for aesthetic reasons.

In my camera bag

My true passion is film photography and adding colors to black and white silver gelatin prints by hand.I normally carry a little 35mm Lubitel fix focal length film camera which I inherited from my father. It fits perfectly into my hand bag and I love it that with film photography you can't really be sure what you going to get. especially with my 30 year old camera. There is a mystery about it and also the happy accidents. Every time I use this camera I feel close to my late father.

Feedback

Try to take close-up images of the body by using only one light source. Focus on different parts of the body - shoulders, arms, hands... Play around with light but don't take a long time. Don't use a tripod because that will limit your movements. I prefer moving around with my camera and trying to take images from different viewpoints.
