Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken on South Congress street in wonderful Austin, Texas. Congress becomes South Congress at the Colorado River and is home to some of the most historical and eclectic shops and motels.

Time

I had 6 rolls of film for this trip. 2 Pan F+ 50, 2 Delta 400 and 2 Delta 3200. I used up the slower film earlier in the day while the sun was higher in the sky. This shot was taken around 5pm.

Lighting

I only ever shoot with available light and will wait for as long as it takes to get the right lighting conditions. patience is key!

Equipment

I took a very simple setup with me on this trip downtown. I wanted to be very mobile and spontaneous. I did not have any flash equipment with me and only used available light. My camera was an Olympus OM-1n with the standard Zuiko 50mm lens. no tripod or other accessories. This shot was taken while loaded with Ilford Delta 3200 film.

Inspiration

I was walking along the crowded sidewalk and stopped by a large planter to reload my camera with a new roll of film. Just as I was finishing up winding to the first frame this guy rides up and hops off his bike hangs his helmet and then walks away. I raised up my newly loaded camera and fired off a few shots.

Editing

Developed in Ilford DD-X in my darkroom and scanned the negative. I had to tweak the contrast a bit due to the scan but nothing else. The grain comes from the film.

In my camera bag

I got my first SLR in 1985. I did not choose my camera it chose me. I was learning everything I could about photography but had yet to own a camera. Then at a garage sale I opened a box to find an Olympus OM-1n and 50mm lens. My heart leaping, I asked how much. She asked me how much I had which turned out to be 12$. That camera has been with me ever since. I don't use it is much anymore but I get it out in specifically nostalgic times and it still comes through. Today I still only shoot film but I use 2 cameras most often. Minolta Maxxum 7 and Maxxum 9. I also have a Minolta light meter.

Feedback

Be spontaneous at all times. a great photo does not wait.
