Location
This was taken 29 years ago in the side yard of an old house on Easy 7th street in Austin, Texas. I tagged along with a friend who had business with the resident. I waited outside with his young pit-bull "Samson" who is in the drivers window of this truck.Time
I do not recall the exact time as this was taken so long ago. I do know it was mid-day and it was May of 1988.Lighting
Nothing but available light here. I never owned a flash of any kind. Like so many, I take my camera everywhere and whatever light is there at the moment, is the light I have to work with.Equipment
This was taken with the only camera equipment that I owned back then. Olympus OM-1n Zuiko 50mm F1.4 lens Kodak Kodachrome 64 film per what I wrote on the slide frame: May 1988 F8 @ 1/125 Later: Epson V850 Pro to scan the original color slide.Inspiration
I found myself in an unfamiliar yard where I knew I would not likely be returning to and saw several old vehicles. I don't recall now why I stuck with truck except that I remember seeing that it had a "Dodge Brothers" label on the hood and I was so amazed as I had never heard of Dodge Brothers before. I took several shots of this truck from different angles but about three-fourths of the way through a roll I was becoming frustrated because I just could not find the right angle to capture what I was seeing. Sampson had jumped up on the flat bed and at some point I spontaneously placed him in the cab. He popped his head out and that was it!Editing
This shot is originally color. It is a Kodachrome film at ISO 64. I always shot at box speed so I don't think I compensated on my fully manual OM-1n. I have the exposure recorded at F8 @1/125 Scanned using Epson V850 scanner and sliverlight scanning software. Imported into lightroom and converted to BW and that is it.In my camera bag
Then: (when this picture was made) Olympus OM-1n, 50mm Lens, several cokin filters, extra camera battery. As many rolls of ilford film as I could buy and occasionally a roll or tow of kodachrome 64 (I loved low ISO back then and love it now) Now: Film Bag: Cameras: Minolta 9, Minolta CLE Lenses (CLE: 40mm, 28mm and 90mm Rokkor) (Minolta: Maxxum 80-200 APO, Maxxum 85mm, Maxxum 50mm 1.4, Maxxum 100mm, Maxxum 16mm fisheye) 6-10 rolls of Ilford PanF-50, some rolls of old expired film for fun. (I have a good supply) Lens cloth, Manfrotto tripod, a few ND filters in case I want to get some good water effects or something. Digital Bag: Switch out the Minolta 9 for the Sony A99v and that is it. All of my Minolta lenses fit the Sony so no need for duplicate lenses. Thats it, the A99 has a battery grip with 2 batteries for a total of 3. I have never needed more than that, so no need for extra batteries SDcard holder with extra SDCards.Feedback
Be ready to take a moment like waiting for a friend and turn it into an opportunity to take that shot that will last 30 years!
