Behind The Lens

Location

This scene is a place called Sugarloaf Rock.It is in the south west corner of Western Australia.Usually there is quite big surf breaking over the rock but this day the ocean was flat with just a small swell

Time

Had to do a bit of walking down a rocky cliff face to get down to ocean level and set up for around 5.30pm,this allowed time to do a couple of test shots etc before the sunset at 6.30pm.

Lighting

Had two goes at this the first time got into position and set up but the sunset was not very impressive,so planned for the next shoot a few days later.I watch the weather to pick a day with that light cloud cover which you see in the photo. To get this I set the tripod and camera low and used a 2 stop graduation filter.

Equipment

This photo was taken with a Cannon 5D mark 2. with the 24-105 Cannon len. Set to around 28mm. I didn't use 24mm because with the graduation filter holder screwed to the front of the lens at 24mm you tend to pickup the edges of the filter holder and get a vignette effect.

Inspiration

I wanted to talk a photo as a gift for a friend who loves the ocean, but beyond that to represents her character which is soft and beautiful but also strong and determined

Editing

Post-processing was cropping, sharpening and adding vibrance.

In my camera bag

I have a Cannon 5dMk2 with a 24-105 and 70-200 both L series lens.A set of filters. 2x Cannon 430ex flashers with remote triggers ,Sekonic L758 light meter. and tripod

Feedback

When I see something that I think would be a good photo,I will plan what I want from the scene and then how I will get it.With that in mind I then go and and take the shots, but very rarely the shot you are after will come on the first attempt. But rather learn from it and go further armed for the next attempt and even if it requires another attempt go and do it you will be rewarded. Don"t be put off by peoples opinions of your results, accept constructive critiques from other photographers and learn from it.If you take offence you will struggle to improve.
