Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Abbotsford, a city in the country, about an hour out of Vancouver in beautiful British Columbia, Canada. It's a pretty little area near my home, where you can take a stroll on the constructed boardwalk through some wetlands. On this particular day, I had decided to take a drive there and go for a walk with my camera, and just take in some nature. When I arrived I discovered that it had flooded, and everything was under water. Well one might think that I would have been discouraged, but not at all. I love reflection photography, so I was actually quite excited when I arrived and seen all the water covering the fields! And with the mist rolling in, it turned out to be the perfect day for me.

Time

This was taken around 4:00 in the afternoon, on a chilly January day. I had planned my walk for later in the day, knowing of course that the lighting would be best in late afternoon.

Lighting

I actually lucked out with lighting, being as it was later in the afternoon. I didn't have to worry too much about glare from the sun setting behind me. The sun was peaking through the clouds a bit. It was just enough to provide some decent lighting. Most of the sky was overcast which didn't provide a very interesting backdrop, but I actually like the contrast of the sky and the mountains, and the brightness of the reflection.

Equipment

This was shot with a Nikon D300s, with the Nikon 18-200mm lens

Inspiration

I'm always on the lookout for reflections, they have always attracted me. They just draw me in, that mirrored look is so amazing, I could spend hours photographing reflections. In this case I just got lucky, as I was originally going for a walk to see if there was anything interesting to photograph in that area.

Editing

As with any landscape photography, there is always post processing. I brightened it up a bit, added some sharpness, and added a little vibrancy to the color.

In my camera bag

My Nikon D300s, and of course it depends on what I'm photographing that day. I usually have an assortment of lenses when I'm heading out to do landscape photography, as well as my tripod. For landscape I would have my trusty 18-200mm, which I really love as I can shoot literally anything with it. I'll also take my 10-20mm wide angle. I'll usually have my 50mm and my 85mm...just in case. And if I think I might run into some wildlife, I'll add my 500mm to my backpack. Yes it's a lot to carry but that's half the fun.

Feedback

As for reflections, they're everywhere. Whenever I see a body of water, wether it be a puddle or an ocean, I'm always looking for whats reflecting because something always is!! There's really no special talent to shooting a reflection. Of course the usual, watch your lighting so that you're able to pull out the reflection nice and clear. The main advice that I have for this type of photography, is just get out and shoot, and check all those puddles!
