Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Cathedral Falls in West Virginia on the road leading to Hawks Nest State Park. It is easy to miss because the turn off is in a curve of the road.

Time

I took this shot sometime during the morning hours.

Lighting

The day a little over cast but I like to use natural lighting while shooting nature scenes. The sun was angled just right for me to take this shot without needing any additional light.

Equipment

I shot this using a Nikon D60 with a 18-105mm lens and a tripod. No filters were used on the lens

Inspiration

There was a big rainstorm just a day before. The falls are the best after a storm so me and my father drove out to take photos of the waterfalls. The area is gorgeous in the summer with the trees in bloom. Cathedral Falls has been used for weddings and just an overall beautiful spot to photograph. I wanted to show one of my favorite places to visit. The area forms a natural cathedral like feel with the almost perfect circle and the falls being at the center.

Editing

I did do a little post-processing. I mainly worked with the lightness and darkness in the photo to enhance the natural beauty and color of the falls. The scene was made slightly darker than the original photo taken. Not much else was really needed to get the look I wanted for this photo

In my camera bag

Usually the fist thing I have is my Nikon D60 camera and my 18-105mm lens. Then I usually have my 55-300mm lense and a micro lense. You never know what you will find while out on a drive to photograph. Last I usually have a flash for my camera but I don't use it often, just needed if more light is require.

Feedback

My best advise for anyone wanted to capture a similar shot would be to have a tripod. A slow shutter speed is needed for the flow of the water and without a tripod, your shot will just blur. The time of the day can be important as well. Try capturing it early morning but before noon. I found the best light was during the morning or late afternoon. The sun is angled just right to highlight the area beautifully
