Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in British Columbia, Canada. I was on a bus heading up to Whistler. The scenery along the whole trip was pretty spectacular but this specific photo was taken as we drove around the edge of Howe Sound. The bus wasn't stopping so I shot it through the window of our moving bus.

Time

It was late in the afternoon when I took this photo just as the sun was setting. It was the middle of winter so the days were short and it got dark pretty early. I remember the bus had broken down half way through the trip so it happend to be sunset just as we passed by the Sound.

Lighting

The lighting was amazing. The sun in the background silhouetted the mountains, created a glow behind the clouds, and reflected off the water perfectly.

Equipment

Shot on my first DSLR, a Nikon D3000 with Tamron 18-270mm

Inspiration

The Canadian wilderness is just amazing and coming from Australia it was quite different to what I normally see.

Editing

There was quite a bit of post processing in this shot. Being shot through a window while moving I had to use as fast a shutter speed as possible to avoid blur. However the light was fading so the photo was quite underexposed and the colours were washed out. I adjusted the white balance and colour saturations to bring out the rich colours and changed the levels to correct the exposure, and bring out the contrast in the clouds.

In my camera bag

My equipment is simple, a Nikon D5200 and Tamron 18-270mm f3.5. The range of 18-270 covers everything and is a perfect travel lens for most situations. I always have plenty of memory cards because there is nothing worse then having the perfect scene and no card space to capture it.

Feedback

Timing can be everything. Don't get too caught up in the technical aspects of a photo. Be in the moment and take the photo before it passes. You might not always be in the prefect setting to take the photo but minor shortfalls can usually be fixed in post.
