Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at Waterville Valley, New Hampshire. I was the IT director for the ski resort at the time, and my office was on the 3rd floor of the administration building giving me an almost straight on view of the lower part of the mountain.

Time

Probably close to midnight.

Lighting

It was pitch black, no moon, overcast skies. Since it was well after closing, even most of the external lights of the building I was in were off.

Equipment

I was using my Canon 20D with the 100mm 2.8 macro L lens, handheld, propped against the window frame, at 1/30th of a second using an ISO of 800 at 2.8.

Inspiration

I had been shooting film for long while by this time, and the 20D was my first foray into digital. My wife also is into photography and wanted to move more more towards macro photography, so I bought the lens for her birthday and had it delivered to my work. With this being our first L lens and hearing the accolades of them for years, the temptation was just too great, and I had to try it the night before I was going to give it to her. Seeing the snow groomer coming down the mountain looked like the best way to check out the new lens.

Editing

Other than some white balance to correct for the temperature of the lights on the groomer and brightness/contrast it is relatively untouched.

In my camera bag

At this point it was just the 20D, kit lens, and the 100mm macro lens.

Feedback

Having come from the film side, where you just don't shoot 36 frames to "play around" (unless you have the money). The digital world really allows me to do a lot of "what if" shooting. You can understand the mechanics of exposure, but every piece of equipment is different and I enjoy the ability to stretch things to see just what my camera is able to do.
