Location
Off Soda Lake road in Carrizo Plains National Monument in southern California.Time
It had been cloudy most of the day and I had already scouted out this area earlier in the day but figured since the sun wasn't gonna show that I should keep looking for flowers in the hills. Nearing sunset the sky began to clear and I took a chance and drove back over to this huge purple field. I got there about 3 min before the sun started going behind the hills and got off maybe 3-4 shots of the sun flare before it disappeared. Pretty lucky to be sure!!Lighting
since this was the first time I had visited the park I was really unfamiliar with the layout or topography. About the only thing I knew was where the sun was going to go down if the sky cleared so I just kept that in mind while scouting the park. Really got lucky with the fields of flowers and the clearing sky. Very fortunate to have been in the right place at the right time.Equipment
I used a NIKON D810 with a Nikon 35mm prime, F22, 1/20th sec and a manfrotto tripod.Inspiration
I had been following the progression of spring wildflowers on the internet (desertusa.com) and really wanted to see fields of flowers somewhere. When they started to show up in the comments of the flower tracker I took the day off and drove the 5hrs south just to see what I could find. Catching the sunset was just gravy since all I had set out for was just to see the fields of flowers.Editing
had to process 2 files to expose for the foreground. all done in adobe raw then cleaned up in adobe photoshopIn my camera bag
The d810 and 4 different nikon primes, 20, 35, 50 and 85.....the zoom lenses are pretty expensive (14-24 and the 24-70 and the 70-200)Feedback
The internet has a wealth of info which can be used to help out before hand on any trip. The Photographer's Ephemeris can help with the sun and moon and where they will be in the sky. Sites like wildflower spotting or fall color spotting can allow you to narrow down a time frame in which to go shooting. You can never control the weather but narrowing down the things that can go wrong (ie. location, time of year and weather forecasts) can help make what ends up in front of your lense more appealing.
