Location
This photo was taken on Brighton seafront in winter. The Brighton wheel stood to the left of the pier and was having a little TLC to keep it on top form throughout the winter.Time
I swim with the Brighton sea swimmers. We get to see the city before it wakes up, before work starts. I tried to make a habit of taking a photo every morning before or after swimming. To take a moment to appreciate the quiet, the changing scenery and the experience we had and shared.Lighting
It was early winter morning, so the air was still quite low. The light was crisp and even though there were a few clouds in the sky, it wasn't bleak. The sun rising to the east which usually reflects off the wheel, silhouetted it and brought out the crisp, moody colours in the sky.Equipment
This one was taken on my phone. I know it's unconventional but I enjoy the rawness and accessibility of being able to take my photos anywhere. It makes me consider the scenery, my location and surroundings all the time. This was when I started taking photos from the water, this can be seen in more recent snaps.Inspiration
The Brighton Wheel was a temporary structure on the seafront. It was only expected to be there a year or so but ended up staying about 4 years. During this time it changed with the seasons. It was lit up for pride and Christmas, and in this instance, the pods were removed for a good clean and a bit of maintenance. I was unsure about the wheel in the beginning, but seeing it constructed and evolve, really made it a significant addition to the landscape. I miss seeing it from the water!Editing
A little structuring and contrast, a touch of vignette. Other than that, just the lovely light of dawn.In my camera bag
Nikon d5200, standard af 18-55mm Nikon lens. 50mm prime. A couple of 64gb memory cards. Extra battery and a few business cards. iPhone 6s and waterproof case. Clip fisheye lens.Feedback
I get overwhelmed by the city sometimes. I miss so much because I'm just thinking about getting to the next place. Taking this time to stop and go out In the early hours, to see your hometown in a different light really makes you see new things. It's a challenge to yourself to turn things around, give positive connotations to structures or scenery you have overlooked because of its manic nature. I always am inspired by Ansel Adams. Both his photography and his ethos when he states; "you don't take a photograph, you make a photograph"
