Location
This photo was taken on the banks of the river Humber in Hull , it is of the old Alexandra dock sheds prior ro the Siemens project being built in there place. for those wanting to know the camera settings they are as follows Aperture Priority iso 100 30sec exposure -3.3 exposure bias f8 and lastly centre weightedTime
This shot was taken at just before 9pm on the 24th September 2014 on a very calm day.Lighting
Yes as you can see in this photo i made use of some artificial lighting in the far background to help illuminate some of the features and utilised some artificial light from Alexander dock in the foreground .Equipment
I used some pretty ordinary equipment for this shot, i used a Nikon D7000 with a Nikkor 18-55mm vr lens attached, it was attached to a Konig tripod which i have found to be a nice robust tripod, i didn`t use any flash as i used all the lighting from around me to give character.Inspiration
I was inspired to take this shot for posterity as i knew that the Siemans contract had been given the go ahead and that this feature would be demolished and lost for all time as part of that development.Editing
I did a little bit of post processing in Photoshop to help open some of the shadows and pull back some detail in the highlights and make some minor adjustments to exposure and colour balance etc, nothing out of the ordinary for the many of us that shoot raw.In my camera bag
Equipment i normally carry is as follows... Nikon D7000 Nikkor AF-S 18-55mm vr 3.5-5.6 G II Nikkor AF-S 55-300mm vr 4.5-5.6 G ED I also carry some ND grad filters 4,6 and 8 stop i carry a polariser and a FLD and a uv filter. then i carry a small cleaning kit comprised of a blower and a lens brush and also some lens cleaning fluid. i carry a wireless trigger which i use for long exposure work such as this image. then last but not least is my trusty Konig tripod kn-60 or my larger Manfrotto Art055(depends on event)Feedback
Advice i can offer for those is to have patience and don`t give in on a shot as conditions are often not right and a shot needs to be repeated time and time again till you get a piece you are happy with, Long exposure work is all about that practice as it does take a little trial and error . for example don`t go trying to do a long exposure on a windy day as you will encounter a lot of failure. Another tip is to use a wireless trigger of some sort to minimise camera shake. Don`t try to take long exposures without a sturdy base for the camera such as a tripod. Patience is the biggest tip to be honest.
