Location
She and I had worked together before, and she asked me to do a session with her and their two dogs. To keep it straightforward, we did the shooting at the apartment complex where she, husband and dogs lived (Army family). The complex had a small pond with a fountain in the center.Time
Sun angles seem most dramatic either early morning or late afternoon. We did this session late afternoon. The sun was then at an angle that allowed us to "light up" the fountain.Lighting
I exposed for the fountain to create a silhouette effect. In post processing, the black & white treatment seemed to fit this photo perfectly. She kept both the color and B&W versions though, and we all thought this one was the real "keeper".Equipment
For the session, I took the Nikon D-5100 with both the 18-55 and 55-300 lenses. The lighting was bright enough that it allowed hand-held shooting.Inspiration
She and the dogs were playing around and I was following and doing the run-and-gun shooting. She dropped to her knees and the dog's ears went up - and I was lucky enough to be in the right place and got to capture this.Editing
Usually, I limit my post processing to the levels necessary to make the photo look like I remember things being when I pushed the shutter. This one though seemed to demand black & white, so that's where we took it.In my camera bag
Normally, I take my full camera bag along, which has a Nikon D-7200, Nikon D-5100 and Nikon D-90 along with the 18-55, 55-300 and a 50mm lens. It also has a Promaster 200 flash (TTL, high-speed sync) and two flexible clamps.Feedback
I think the "lesson learned" from this shot is to let things play out on their own, be quick on the shutter. I've found that many times the unplanned captures are surprising and many times they are the ones that we end up really loving. Planned, posed shots are great - those are the money shots. Unplanned may contain emotions and elements that really make the shot.
