Behind The Lens

Location

Horses hang out in this field in Plano, Texas. This colt was particularly interesting to watch, that typical playfulness and energy.

Time

On an early evening, I grabbed the camera and headed over to see the horses and maybe take some shots.

Lighting

This particular evening, the horses roamed an area that put them between me and the setting sun. I wish I could take credit for great planning, but I just lucked out. The sun highlighted the colt and the mane, the colt stopped nibbling on the tree, and I took the shot.

Equipment

At the time, I was using a Nikon Coolpix 8800. I loved that camera, but no longer have it as it (and I) fell into a shallow river together, and it never recovered. The evening session was done all hand-held.

Inspiration

Horses are such beautiful creatures; they are powerful and graceful, huge and delicate, all at the same time. Colts, however, are not yet as graceful - they prance, hop, skip and jump around, and nibble on all kinds of things - in this case, tree bark. I was fascinated with the tree bark nibbling by this colt, kept moving my shooting position, and was able to capture this in-the-tree image.

Editing

Lighting was good enough to keep the ISO low, which kept the grain low too, and everything worked. The only post-processing on the image was some cropping.

In my camera bag

Since the loss of my 8800, I've moved to a Nikon 5100, with 18-55 and 55-300 kit lenses. I've recently added a 50mm 1.8 to the kit. Over time, I've added used flashes (SB80-DX, SB-600) as well as a couple of modifiers (softox, octa, 5-in-1 reflector) and light stands.

Feedback

Advice? Find an interesting location and work it - shoot all different angles, different settings and at variuos times of the day. I'd been visiting this area and shooting the horses for about 2 months before all the pieces fell into place for this shot, and it was really rewarding to see it come out.
