Behind The Lens
Location
This photo was taken from my home in St. Augustine, Florida. The San Sebastian river is in the foreground. The Great Cross of the Mission Nombres de Dios is in the background. St. Augustine was established in 1565. When Pedro Menendez came ashore, a small wooden cross was placed to mark the spot of the landing. In 1965, the Great Cross was built to mark the spot. The Cross is a St. Augustine landmark, and can be viewed from several locations in town.Time
This was taken at sunrise on March 9, 2015.Lighting
This was shot away from the nearby buildings and streetlights. The only light was from the rising sun.Equipment
This was shot using a Nikon D3100 with an AF-S DX Nikkor 55-300mm lens. Hand-held, no tripod.Inspiration
I was particularly drawn to the composition. While the sunrise was beautiful in it's own right, the silhouette of the Great Cross in the glow of the sun made it more interesting. I also liked the way the sun was framed between the clump of Pampas grass on the left and the arch of the tree on the right.Editing
I use Lightroom for post-processing, but I admit that I don't have a lot of experience with it. For this photo, I straightened the horizon slightly, and adjusted the Vibrance and Shadows to give it more impact. In my camera bag
I have a Nikon D3100 camera body. My kit lenses are an AF-S DX Nikkor 18-55mm, and an AF-S DX Nikkor 55-300mm. I recently purchased my first prime lens, an AF-S Nikkor 50mm. I always carry a speedlight, a remote shutter release, and two backup batteries. I also have several filters and lens hoods.Feedback
Always carry your camera. Always analyze your surroundings for the perfect shot. Aside from one photography class in high school, I am self-taught. I learn every day. I may take a hundred shots before I get the one I want, but for me, that's part of the fun of it.
