When I started photographing birds, a lot of my images ended up blurry and incorrectly exposed because I allowed the camera to make all the decisions.


Lately, I have been experimenting with intentional blurs to add a unique, artistic expression to my work. I have a ways to go before I understand the technique, but I am pleased with how this one turned out.


I made this image of a flock of Starlings late in the evening as they started to roost for the night. I intentionally blurred the wings by using a very slow shutter speed and overexposed the image to silhouette the birds against a colorless sky.
