Location
After purchasing all the accessories for a photography studio in March, I set up my home studio in a spare room and shot this image that night.Time
I wanted to have a solid black background and a sharp, mirrored reflection in the image so I spent the day unpacking and setting up the equipment. Once that was completed, it was night time. The lack of any other lighting is how I was able to adjust the studio lights. It took some time and a lot of shots to put everything in the correct places to get this image, but it was worth it! I wanted to capture an image that created a mirrored image of the rose as well as creative use of negative space. I used 3 studio lights and a softbox to diffuse the lighting and to get the correct angle for the reflection of the white rose, without blowing detail in the highlights.Equipment
The image was shot with a Canon EOS 6D, Canon L EF 100 mm macro lens, Monfrotto tripod, studio lighting, softbox and black reflective base. Aperture f/8, ISO 100, Shutter 25/10, Focal Length 100 mm.Inspiration
There's several reasons why I was inspired to make this image. I received the Canon EOS 6D as a Christmas present from my husband and really wanted to test a full frame versus a crop sensor. I had set up my home studio and wanted to learn more about studio lighting and practice a different genre of photography than my usual genre, birds and wildlife. The 6D has wi-fi capability built in, a feature my other cameras don't have, and I was eager to use it.Editing
I shoot all images in RAW, so post-processing is a must. For this image, I imported the file into Adobe Lightroom Classic for basic edits, exported it into Adobe Photoshop to use the spot removal tool for imperfections, such as dust on the black base, and to add my watermark using the text tool. The image was exported into DXO collection for RAW sharpening and Define for noise reduction and then converted to .JPG format and a copy saved as a .PSD file.In my camera bag
I keep all of my camera equipment in a Canon backpack, which I take with me all the time. I never know what I will see and like to have a variety of lenses and camera bodies to choose from. I have a Canon 6D (full frame), Canon 7D Mark II (crop sensor) and a Canon T2i (entry level, crop-sensor). My lenses are: Canon 50 mm f/1.8, Canon 100 mm L macro f/2.8, Canon 24-105 mm L f/4; Canon 18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6; Canon 55-250 mm f/5-6.3; Canon 400 mm L prime f/5.6 and a Sigma 150-500 mm f/5-6.3. I also use either a Manfrotto monopod or tripod for capturing sharp details.Feedback
Photography is learning about light. Light can be natural, such as sunlight, or artificial from a camera's flash or light bulbs. Understanding light and how it effects an image is a fundamental element of photography. Patience, practice and lots of trial and error.
