Congratulations on making finalist! In my opinion, this shot should have won, if for no other reason, the pure timing of it. Add to that, the subject, lighting, composition, DETAIL and FOCUS, and this is one of the best critter captures I've seen on here!

Location
In San Rita - Costa RicaTime
in the afternoonLighting
It was a rainy season in the jungle of Santa Rita at the time of my stay so lots of clouds which reduced the amount of light,,,so even though i was using a flash I had to bump up my ISO a little which is something i try to avoidEquipment
I use Canon 1DX along with Canon lens 100mm F2.8L fitted with a speed light Canon 600EXInspiration
I planned a 12 days trip to beautiful Costa Rica which is rich and famous of its birds and wildlife so after a week of shooting birds such as toucans, aracaris, hummingbirds and vultures I decided to look around with some local guide for other to explore around and take different approach in photography by shooting macro,,,, so we started seeing many stunning frogs hidden between the trees while i was admiring those little creature the guide kept on the look out for other animals and thats when he spotted the Green Snake, i would've never have seen it due to its colour and size. suddenly all our attention has moved toward this precious snake which according to the guide is it quiet difficult to find due to it's colour and size. so as we were coming close the snake started to open its mouth to warn us and this is when i took this pic , then left it in peace , unharmed :)Editing
whenever i shoot landscape or wildlife i intend to keep the post-processing to minimal and if the image doesnt appear how my eyes have seen then I do some little touch ups like cropping and boosting a bit of contrast and saturation like in this image. In my camera bag
I always take two bodies just in case things can go wrong as i have experienced previously in Iceland ,,, as i managed successfully to break 2 bodies and 4 lenses! so I have one 1DX and a Canon 5D Mark3. Canon 24-70 F2.8ii is a must have in my bag for all purposes, beside that, Canon 16-35mm F2.8 is my first choice for landscape, while the Canon 400mm f2.8ii is my favourite for wildlife.Feedback
to be a nature photographer it requires a lot of patience, preparations & studies as you can't predict how the animals would behave and what their actions may develop to. so be patient and and have your trigger ready for the perfect moment
