I really love this image. While the majority of it has very defused lighting, the mountain tops and a section of trees in the middle are painted with bright direct sun. It makes for very interesting contrast.

Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at Morraine Lake, Banff National Park, which is located in Alberta, Canada.

Time

My family had driven out for the day to go hiking, and right before breaking for lunch, I noticed that the sun was at the perfect angle that it looked like a streak of gold (hence the title) was hitting the lake surface, and reflecting over the water. This image was captured at 11:25 am, on September 21, 2014.

Lighting

I really love the lakes of Canada. The water is always so clear and beautiful, which can be seen in the picture! The sun beam is reflected nicely in the water, and likewise with the mountains. I'm kind of disappointed with the mountains in the back, since they are slightly washed out, but I really wanted to maintain that natural light sort of look.

Equipment

Unfortunately, I did not have my Nikon D5000 with me at that time, but the scenery was just too good of an opportunity to pass up. So this was taken by my iPhone 5c, with a 2.4 aperture and ISO of 50. No flash was used.

Inspiration

Nature is captivating. My favourite thing to shoot would probably be scenery. I love going to the mountains, breathing the fresh air of the pine trees, and just being away from the city to become one with Mother Nature. In addition, I very much enjoy documenting my travels, so every time I go out of town, I like to take pictures of my experiences!

Editing

Not a lot of post-processing was used on this image. I wanted to keep it natural looking, so I just sharpened the features a bit and filtered out some of the sunlight. But I am still a young amateur photographer so I have a lot to learn in regards to post processing and photography in general!

In my camera bag

In my camera bag, I always have the Nikon D5000. I also have the 52mm 0.45X wide angle macro lens. I don't really enjoy bringing tripods or heavy equipment of any sort (partially because I do not own a lot), but also due to the fact that most of my pictures are taken from hiking adventures, whether it be at the end of a trail or at the top of a mountain, but either way heavy equipment is a pain to drag along.

Feedback

Hopefully, it is a clear day so that the sun is able to shine. It is ideal to get to the location before noon, but then again there are many variables. It could be a cloudy day so that the sun is blocked, or the angle might be off so that the sun beam is not evident. But patience is key, and eventually, if everything else goes well, and the sun is in the exact perfect angle, then you'll have yourself a lovely shot!
