This photo was taken on the North Shore of Oahu during the winter swell. Waves can get as big as 50+, this was one of them.Time
This photo was taken mid-morning around 9:30am. I love that time of the day, the colors aren't too much and the brightness is still mild.Lighting
I love to try and catch a wave in a different way then others do. I stay focussed and ready to shoot any time. Sometimes I have to get my feet wet to get that perfect view.Equipment
I use my Canon 7D. Love the speed on this camera and how I can zoom in and it sets really fast. No tripod, this was hand held since I was in a place I'd have to move fast. Also the sun was enough light for this shot. The lens is the kit lens, nothing special and no filters. I love to shoot as I see it.Inspiration
The winter swells are awesome here on Oahu. I plan the night before to get out if I know they are going to be big. I love to watch the waves and the way they are always different and it's quite relaxing waiting for that "big" one.Editing
I do a little post-processing in LightRoom. A little tweak on the exposure to bring it down and pop the contrast and a pinch of vibrance if needed. I love to keep it natural to the way I see it.In my camera bag
In my backpack, I carry my Canon 7D, an extra battery, my 200mm zoom lens, and my 50mm lens. Depending on what and where I'm shooting, I'll carry my tripod just in case I see something that calls it. I don't carry too much, I really try to keep it simple so I can focus on shooting, not where all my stuff is.Feedback
My advice is have your things ready, battery charged, settings set to what you are going to shoot, and to always be safe. Wave watching is fun, but shooting can be dangerous if you don't keep one eye on mother nature at all times. Otherwise, get out and shoot and have fun!
