Location
This picture was taken walking up Terminus Road next to the railway station in Brighton (UK).Time
As you can see this way taken on a very rainy evening, around 6pm in February. I had been in town taking photos earlier in the afternoon and was returning home after spending time with some friends and decided to keep shooting despite the low light and poor weather.Lighting
The limited artificial light made for a rather too long shutter speed (max ISO was set to 800) at 1/8 s on f3.5 for unsupported shooting let alone moving, hence all the blurring. As you can see there rain drops on the lens at this point, not something I would ever normally look for but in this case I think they really add to the atmosphere of the shot as they catches the light from the street lamp.Equipment
My Nikon D40 in P mode with an 18-55mm kit lens.Inspiration
Walking up this hill to escape the rain I thought I'd try to capture something of the hurried motion of the commuters returning home from the station ahead of me. Shielding my camera as best I could with my free hand I started shooting 'from the hip' as I walked. I like shooting at dusk to get the colourful mixture of natural and artificial light as darkness falls. The rain adds glistening reflections of the street lamps and car lights that I find really exciting. I shot quite a lot of images that night knowing that many would be too blurry to use as I was not using a tripod; despite bracing my camera against lamp posts, railings and corners where I could.Editing
I converted the RAW image to grayscale and pushed up the contrast, clarity and shadows and drew back the highlights. Added some luminance noise reduction and a little vignetting and that was it.In my camera bag
Currently just my rather tatty old Nikon D40 with the two kit lenses it came with (DX 18-55 and DX 55-200) and a Nikon SB-400 flash.Feedback
Being out in the rain with your camera can be somewhat risky if, like me, your camera has no weather sealing and you don't own an umbrella. That said it can reward you with some exciting results, particularly at night in urban environments with artificial lighting. All I can really say is take the fastest lens you can, keep as much rain off as possible and keep shooting.
