I took this photo while at a barn I used to ride at with a friend. I was doing a photoshoot with my friend and her horse and while she got ready I went and saw some of the other horses around the barn.Time
It was around 2pm on a February day. I was standing maybe 15 feet from the end of the barn aisle that led outside. I was just chilling with this horse - his name is Beau - and petting him and feeding him treats while I waited for a friend.Lighting
The lighting in the barn wasn't great, but I loved this horse so I wanted to try and get some pictures of him. I leaned back (trying to get his big head into frame) and snapped a couple pictures with the flash on. I was expecting grainy, dark photos, or weirdly bright and blurry photos, but somehow this picture turned out beautifully!Equipment
I believe this was shot using a Nikon D5000, with a 30-110mm lens. The automatic flash was on due to the poor barn lighting.Inspiration
I always loved how pretty Beau was, and how he could look like such a beautiful horse at the right angles. I wanted a few pictures of him for social media and things like that, so I opened his stall door and started snapping pictures of him. He started walking to the opening and stuck his head right in the opening. I leaned back to get his head as fully in my viewfinder as I could and snapped the picture. I have no clue how this managed to come out so nicely with the lower lighting of the barn, as well as flash on.Editing
I actually did not edit this picture at all before I uploaded it! I have since copied the picture and increased the color saturation a tiny bit, as well as darkening a shadow or two for a warmer effect from the lighting, but this photo is the original, untouched version. In my camera bag
I usually only bring my camera, a 30-110mm lens, and a 55-200mm lens with me on shoots, as I cannot carry very many things (or own very much camera equipment). If I have a specific type of photo I am wanting to shoot, or I am photographing a horse show or other event, I will bring a tripod to steady the camera.Feedback
I honestly am not 100% sure on how I managed to capture this photo, so all I can really say is even if you think the lighting is awful and the pictures will be grainy or the flash will make it look funny, just give it a shot anyway. You never know what will happen when you point a camera at something in an uncontrolled area and you just have to have faith in your abilities and that you are capable of taking the photo you want if you put enough effort into it.
