The construction of a new bridge over the Seine was initiated by the predecessor of Henri IV, the last king of the dynasty Valois, Henry III, who laid the first stone in May 1578.
Today this place is one of the major attractions in Paris and for that era, with its 232 m (761 ft) long and 22 meters (72 feet) wide Pont Neuf was a modern bridge with several innovations. The Pont Neuf is the first bridge in Paris without houses built in it. It was also the first bridge with sidewalks making an instant hit for the Parisians who start to use the bridge as a place for meetings and social contacts.
