Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my backyard in New Jersey where my family has lots of bird feeders and plants to feed our feathered visitors.

Time

This photo was originally taken on June 11, 2012. In the afternoon.

Lighting

Natural sunlight, no flash.

Equipment

This was taken handheld. My camera at the time was the canon rebel t3i. and the standard kit lens EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II 1/200 sec. f/8 55mm iso 400 Hummingbirds are very attracted to the color red.I suggest planting a garden or even getting annual flowers that attract pollinators,Find out what native plants grow best in your area. They can be so helpful to bees and butterflies and provide natural food sources. If you plant perennials that grow back every year you can expect to see these migrants year after year. You can also use hummingbird feeders and use a 1:4 ratio of table sugar and water, but do not add any food coloring. Feeders need to be cleaned regularly to avoid mold and don't leave them too long n the summer heat. Hummingbirds can be very territorial and may fend off other birds visiting a feeder. Consider looking into native flowers to plant to attract these jeweled birds. You may also look up what species of hummingbirds are regular visitors to your area and when they are expected to migrate. Know your subject so maybe consider a bird field book or helpful bird identifying app.

Inspiration

I am a very avid birdwatcher and my family has fed birds for years. We had a red salvia plant that we one day noticed lured these hummingbirds to our yard.My mother decided to try and set up a hummingbird feeder to see if we could get a closer encounter. I stood very quietly and patiently by the feeders waiting to see if one would show up. It takes a lot of patience and being still to not startle these lovely birds, but with time they will learn to recognize you and even express curiosity as this male ruby throat kind of just hoovered in front of me to allow me a few lucky photos. Hummingbirds are beautiful and very fast. It can be hit or miss with the shutter speed.

In my camera bag

I normally photograph with my canon rebel.I started with a a canon rebel t3i when this photo was taken since 2019 I haven been using a newer canon rebel t6. I love the telephoto kit zoom lens when photographing my backyard birds. Usually the canon efs 55-250mm and lately I always have the canon efs 75-300mm as my go to lens.

Feedback

this was taken with a 18-55 mm. Equipment isn't always a guarantee of a good shot. When photographing wildlife .A lot of times its patience and luck, waiting very stil and quietl and knowing your subject. With birds building a familiarity with them put out bird feeders and offering their favorite type of seed and knowing how to crop or blur a background to avoid those man made elements. Find out what your favorite bird likes to eat or what tree types they build nests in or check out bird migration forecasts.Learn their songs and calls.Spring and fall are amazing times to go birdwatching when animals are moving to different nesting grounds. You don't have to go far for a good shot. Be inspired by the nature and local wildlife native to your area. Respect nature. If you have a cat be careful with letting them outdoors. For more information on ruby throated hummingbirds consider looking up the Cornell lab and checking out apps for bird identification. https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Ruby-throated_Hummingbird/
